"Web site specializes in kid-designed cards" www.herald.com, by Madeline Baro Diaz, May 12, 2000
Bubble-blowing fish and kissing dogs might not be standard greeting card fare, but they're what some South Florida kids are showing off on the Internet.
KidVentures is a nonprofit group through which kids run a real-life greeting card business. The kids design, market and sell the cards. They also choose what they want to do with the profits.
Right now, KidVentures only has a pilot program in a fifth-grade classroom at Ludlam Elementary School in South Miami, but it will soon expand to four classrooms, says project director Alice Horn.
WEBMASTER: Victor Estevez, Horn's 15-year-old neighbor, is her "ongoing technological consultant." Knowledgeable in Web design, he helped Horn put the [initial] site together.
STARRY DOGS: Stars and hearts are featured on several of the kid-designed cards currently showcased online, including a "Star Child" card with a heart-shaped Earth and a "Thank You" card with two lovey-dovey dogs.
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR: KidVentures will feature a new line of tropical holiday cards on the Web site in the fall.
MAKE THEIR DAY: Horn thinks having an entire line of products on the Web
that is designed by kids is pretty cool. "It also does wonders for their self-esteem when they see one of their designs sell," she said of her young entrepreneurs. "They just grow a couple of inches on the spot."
